On September 25, 2014,Governor McAuliffe made it official when he issued a proclamation (attached) declaring October as “Fall is for Planting” month. The CVNLA led the proclamation request and was joined by the James River Association, The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, the Virginia Green Industry Council, The Virginia Dept. of Conservation and Recreation and the Va. Dept. of Agriculture and Consumer Services. This is a joyous day and we should all promote fall as the best time to plant not only for the beatification of our landscapes but to help reduce storm water runoff.
Best, Jim Hassold
As many of you know, the CVNLA is spearheading a “Fall is for Planting” campaign emphasizing the benefits and advantages to planting in the fall. We have contacted every independent Garden Center and Nursery in the Metro Richmond area and everyone has agreed to promote this campaign. In the very near future you will be seeing “Fall is for Planting” banners (the official version is attached) proudly displayed all across town. In addition, the banners will be displayed at the State Fair, the Lewis Ginter Plant Sale and on PBS’s “Virginia Home Grown.”
The more all of us reinforce this idea of fall planting the more all of us will benefit from it.

We have prepared some “talking points” that you are more than happy to use. As follows:
Special thanks to Bill Dutcher of Colesville Nursery, Emily Orr of Glen Allen Nursery, Karen Batalo and Richard Nunnally. Here’s to a great fall season!
